The Hillside Book Groups are composed of approximately ten dedicated readers who participate in a

monthly discussion of literary fiction.

We are committed to a careful reading of each book, readiness to participate, and regular attendance.

Discussion is open and informal, with an implicit contract to share the floor and respect and invite the views of others.

7:30PM

3rd Tuesday of the Month

The Hillside Book Club is looking for a couple of new members. We meet on the THIRD Tuesday of each month for an hour and a half in the evening to discuss a work of fiction – usually a novel, usually written in the 20th or 21st century. We expand our literary horizons by reading books that none of us have read before. Recent selections include:  Maria Dermoût: The Ten Thousand Things (1955); Lloyd Jones: Mr. Pip (2006); Luis Urrea: The Hummingbird's Daughter (2005); Patrick White:  Riders in the Chariot (1961). Some of our upcoming selections are: Patrick Mondiano: Young Once (1981); Iris Owens: After Claude (1973); Sylvia Townsend Warner: Lolly Willowes (1926); Joseph O'Neill: Netherland (2008).

We don't eat, drink or socialize (much). We focus on the books and on the experience of reading. Our current membership stands at 9 (4 men, 5 women) – down over 5 years from about 12. If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch with an email to Katherine Flegal: kmflegal@hotmail.com

Our club is currently full but if you are a HSC member and would like to start a second club please contact the HSC Manager at: manager@hillsideclub.org
