Once Upon A Hillside: 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago

George W. Hahn – President 1933-35, 2nd VP 1932-33, Director-at-large 1935-36, Club member for 52 years
Dorothy Doty Hahn – Club member for 67 years
George Walter Hahn was born in 1894 in Murphys, California. He studied at the California College of Dentistry, an education interrupted by World War I, where he was assigned to the dental department at the San Pedro Naval Station. He entered private practice in Berkeley in 1921 and began specializing in orthodontics. He co-founded the orthodontics curriculum at the UC School of Dentistry in 1930 and was an assistant professor therefrom 1935-65. He served as president of the California Dental Association in 1944 and of the American Association of Orthodontics in 1968, after which he retired from practice. George died in 1977 at the age of 82.
Dorothy Doty was born in Rawlins, Wyoming in 1898 and married George Hahn in Los Angeles in 1924. The Hahns joined the Hillside Club in 1924, and George served on the Board of Directors for four years, including two as president. They loved the outdoors and had a cabin in Dutch Flat in Placer County where they spent many summers. The Hahns moved to Montecito in southern California before George’s death, but Dorothy kept up her membership in the Club for many years afterward. Her 67-year tenure is the second-longest in the Club’s history, surpassed only by Marjorie Robinson. Dorothy died in 1998, just four months shy of her 100th birthday.
